2022-05-15 CBX RHS Mirror Loose
On ride yesterday was blissfully thinking how great the CBX was running...
Carbs synced and performance smooth idle to redline.
Rebuilt front brakes powerful and smooth, great 'feel'.
Charging system at 14.5 VDC, all is GREAT!
Then the freaking mirror starts flopping around...
Mad dash to gas station, get mirror removed and stashed safely in saddlebag.
Back at the house, this is what's up...
Wonder what happens if one removes the screws.
Are the nuts captive or do they fall into the fairing abyss?
Looks like a circlip used to live in groove, keeping the spring in wavy washer in place.
Groove.
Bought a few different sizes before riding home.

CBX Mirror Fix Cont
The internent is a wonderful thig. From ICOA FB page, learned the bottom most component is in fact the retainer, not a spacer.
Close up view. After 41 years under spring pressure, it just deformed enough to jump the holding groove.
My potential fix - use washer(s) to compress the spring....
After first tapping hole with M4 .7 tap. Use 1/8" bit to enlarge hole.
Then use cap screw compress the whole assembly. This can be done with the external mirror mount
still installed on the fairing.
More to come...
2022-05-16 CBX Mirror - Complete
2022-05-16 CBX Mirror - Fixed!
Decided to try the cap-screw option.
Why?
if it failed all I did was slightly enlarge the hole ID and thread it.
Then use c-clip option!
Wonderful neighbor G-Man came up with this set up - Purrrfeccttt!
First drilled hole using 1/8" bit.
Tap is M4, .7 pitch. Removed belt from drill press pulleys, tapped by hand.
Using the lathe chuck and drill press ensured a straight and parallel hole and threading.
Test run using just-bought-today hardware.
Worked perfect!
Detente mechanism.
With spring.
Test fitment. M4 x. .7 SS cap screw, 2 copper washers, 1 SS washer. Seemed to work good... <later on??>
Seating the rubber boot. First seat on mirror end. Use small bungee to lift away.
Yeah. Yeah. I know. The two smaller copper washers barely 'covered' the larger washer
that compresses the spring. So the next best thing. NOT my best work, but IS under
cover of the boot!
Finished product! Had to use 2 'larger' SS washers to get correct tension.
Used a screw driver with a 90 degree bend end at tip to 'seat' boot over lip.
Also helps to lubricate with a quick drying liquid.
I used Adams detailing fluid.
There it is. Hope this helps someone in the future.
Long Live the CBX!
