2022-09-15 Rear Wheel Grinding Sound
Noticed on the first test ride a loud, horrible sounding 'popping' noise when backing up.

Like something was binding, then suddenly releasing energy.
My first thougts were ring and pinion in the rear end.

On the lift, the wheel would rotate forward direction just fine.
But bakwards? Oh my.

Sounds horrible, grinding noise and wheel became very difficult to rotate.

Why directional though?

Drained oil from (90wt) from 'pinion' cavity. Clean. No metal.

Drained rear end oil. Clean, No metal.

So, if not ring/pinion gear and/or bearing, what could it be?

Brakes?

Pull the wheel off, look inside and guess what?

Rubbery material, jammed up at brake shoe topside, at expanding pivot point, and captive point too.
Should have taken pics, but was to excited to find potentially, the problem.

Big chunks!
Called my bud 'Radar' aka Don Wreyford who said this is remains of a
'spring protector' on the RHS. Not sure why BMW thought it necessary, as the spring isn't
in contact with rear seal? Just in case, perhaps?

Even inside the spring!

Brand new $500 wheel.
The shop didn't even clean up the brake shoe cavity from oil and road grunge!

Radar suggested using a hose to protect until the 'real' part arrives.
Just might leave it as-is!

Safety wired at top to prevent slipping down.

And bottom. No contact with moving drive hub. :)

Test ride soon!
