2024-11-30 Pozo-Templeton-Morro Bay-Turri on Naomi
Been raining a bit. Last week's ride cancelled. Rain stopped, leaving chilly but workable riding weather.
Forecasted weather indicated no rain for awhile, so used the 50 Hp turbo-charged, inter-cooled 3 cylinder tractor to work the dirt road.
5 hours and 5 gallons of diesel later, the dirt road is smooth as a... <you insert your dream of smooth>...
...Meaning was able to ride the 2013 FJR, Naomi, out the dirt road, no trailer today! So nice...
Arrived at The Porch early, 08:52 to get a little breakfast before riding.
I take morning meds, and food is needed to keep the belly happy.
At a bit over 40k, this FJR is the young gun in the stable.
So capable. And cheap to keep. Easy servicing, for example, valves compared to a Tenere.
BeemerDon's old bike..
Waiting on the Boyz.
Asked Nikki, Porch owner, why they don't offer a 'normal' breakfast instead of foo-foo shit like veggie omelets?
She said the grill is small, and might, would, slow down food delivery when busy..
Me: 'No worries, I'll not rock the boat'.
Nikki: 'Your the only one here, what do you want?'
Here's the result, for 17 USD. Tasty.
The Boyz ready to leave. Dave, aka 'Mr Grumpy face', Kurt and Clem (not riding today),
Brian Louw (always nice to have Brian on a ride!)
Barrie, and Jim Rizzi.
Stop at the old Pozo saloon.. Yakked with local rancher who said the building was built cheap back late 1800's.. and for new owners to bring it up to code
would take alot of work. The second to last owners, the Beanways (the right way, the wrong way, the BEANway, per Rhonda!) got the saloon
'grandfathered' to allow relief from current <over> laws, regulations, policies.
The grandfather clause was important to the Beanway family to continue on after Levi started having 'unconventional' concerts at the venue. Think the evil weed and rap music.
Local ranchers soon tired of hearing Willie Nelson (good thing Willie never toked!) and instead heard a bunch of rappers at full blast. Can't say I blame them....
and... the crowds were different, disrepecting local ranchers property (trespassing), tearing down fences to park etc..
The locals leverged county government to put an end to it, resulting in this fiasco.. IIRC, most if not all charges were dropped.
Even with all this, the saloon was challenged by the grandfather clause.. Yes, they could continue to have concerts.. but could not make changes, as it was now a 'historical site'.
Whatever that means...
The Beanways (Rhonda, Brian, and son Levi were forced to sell when Rhonda fell ill with cancer. Shortly after Rhonda passed, so did Brian.
The Beanway's sold. The new owner, don't recall his name, included Levi as a partner to ensure the grandfather clause remained in effect. However, he decided to make changes,in violation of the grandfather clause , to the small kitchen. The hallway between the 'old' and 'new' saloon was eliminated, including the plauqe dedicated to Mr. Bailey sp? (Get hot or get OUT!) to allow a bigger kitchen and grill.
The county caught wind and the dog fight was on.
We spoke with a local rancher who was driving bulls from one field to another, across Pozo road, who said the now current owners had planned to make it a RV type resort, but ran into overly-burdensome regulatory issuses as they wanted to have Airstream Trailers available for rent in the old 'concert grounds' but was too close to the riparian set-back regulations, power, water, etc requirements.
Searching the web, found this website.. including the Pozo saloon. Kind of sad, it appears to be another corp taking over.
Another link.. more about the saloon.
You can join the Nomad Hotel Group for $400 a year..
So, it will never be the same. Kind of like Wally's Hot Springs in Genoa, Nevada. Once a one man's dream now a corporate goliath. IMHO, of couse.
Off to Jack's in Templeton. EXCELLENT food and service!
Westbound and down..
Old Creek Road never fails...
x
Whale Rock..
.
Pacific ocean ahead!
Morro Rock! No F'n battery farm yet.. tho they are trying really hard to build one at the old PGE Morro Bay power plant. Locals hate it, delayed it, so the corp
went over locals head to the CA state water resource board.. appointed by Gruesom Newsom.. so most likely will be approved.
Before Morro Bay state park..
Los Osos Valley Rd, east bound from Turri Canyon.
Church in Garden Farms, between Santa Margarita and Atascadero. Hope they find funds to fix it up.
Today's route.
My thoughts on Pozo history from my hazy memories. Yes, they might be wrong. Probably are, so if you have more info, corrections, contact me..
