2008-02-20 Riding the AlCarver dirt highway

I live at the end of a 3 mile long dirt road. The county, about 3 weeks ago, graded the dirt road, but did not 'pack' it with a roller or anything.

I'm currently working graveyard, when I left for work the sun was shining.

Then it rained all night...

A bunch.

I've ridden dirt, mx, enduros, desert, and know how to ride dirt.

I also know what it means when you can see the top two inches of dirt 'lift' or 'float' on top of the hard base... it means, it means..

It's going to be a sloooowww ride home! Full lock to lock twice, then decided to drop the outriggers (feet), shift down to 1st, and take it slow.. Many times the front end would slip out, the rear soon to follow. It's ok until the front goes south and the back goes north... Got to gather it all back up and keep going *forward*. Got in the 'rut' of some really soft stuff, and had a heck of a time climbing out of the depression. Jeesh, it was sketchy. Being in the dark only made it worse.

One section was so bad I thought 'I can't stop here, the bike would never stay up on the side or center stand', so I kept going. Long story short, I made it safely home, no spills, no scratches, no fouls. This episode taught me that as a dirt bike, the FJR sucks; looks like I'll be riding another steed for the AlCan run as the Fjr feels like a real  in soft, moist dirt...
