1987 Sears riding mower. Model 917.254310

Just put new tires, drive and mower belts on..

Tires off, time to drop the tranny.

There it is.

Cases split. 1987 grease!

UhOh.

Very worn.

Pinion gear worn too. Look at width at top then look below at how skinny the teeth are.

Bronze gear is driven by pinion input. Chain delivers rotation to lay shaft. Each gear engaged by a rod with 'hook' on inside of layshaft. Final output is via gears on right which drive the spider gears in the differential (removed in this pic).

Shaft cap orientation.

UhOh. No bearings left. Shaft damage. Loose chain.

Cleaned up spider gear aka rear differential.

Broken spider gear shaft.

Parts not available.

Looks like ring pawl gear from a Hytorc HY7 hydraulic torque wrench!

Missing tooth on 3rd gear main shaft.

13" to mounting holes.

17" across axle case area.

First made by Dana, then Spicer, then Foote, then American Yard something.... or the other.

2.25 inches across shaft axis.

Time for a new mower or new to me transaxle.. Off to eBay.
