Memorial details are here.

-----

I'm having a hard time typing this.....but it's got to be said. We lost Tim "twowheelnut" Bates. He passed away at home Friday evening.

I've just spoken with his wife, Patty, and she said he seemed peaceful and didn't suffer...he just died. He was online several hours before his passing, so I'd like to think he was thinking about us.

I extended to Patty the forum's condolences and to call if there is ANYTHING we can do.

She knew how much we all meant to him and knows how much he meant to us...and will share details about a memorial in the days to come.

And I know we all will miss him. My heart weeps....

But, I'm sure as a fellow forum member observed.....he and Andrew are riding together right now....probably in 5th gear. smile.gif

/ Matt

P.S. We've been through tragedy before on this forum and did very well at grieving respectfully...and I'm thankful we'll be just as graceful this time.

What?!? That is really hard to take -- Tim was way too young. Don't even know what to say. Sympathies and condolences to his family.

Rest in Peace, Tim. I'm glad you got to take that trip to Alaska. May you and Andrew ride together this weekend. We'll be thinking of you.

<SNIP>

As I sit here and try to believe my ears from the phone call and my eyes from this posting, I can't help but remember the last time I saw Tim.

We were riding back from a trip down south and we were at his exit. No need for long goodbyes or some drawn-out ceremony, just a friendly wave from in front of me as he hit the blinker and went on his way. I returned the wave and continued on mine. bye.gif

I'm numb...

It's an honor to have called you my friend.

Goodbye Tim... bye2.gif

I tried to go to bed after "the" phone call. No such luck, so here I sit, hoping to see Tim post one more time and not wanting to believe the news. Shock...what a wonderful gift!

I miss you already, Tim, my friend. I'll always remember the ride across Colorado chatting on the radio with Richard and you talking about the unbelievable, "OMG-how awesome and beautiful" scenery.

Thanks for all the memories. The pain in my heart is a measure of how you touched me (and us all) by merely being TWN and passing through life in this world.

My condolences to Patty, the family, their circle of friends and to the entire motorcycling community.

RIP, El Jeffe

All I will say is that after meeting Tim in person at NAFO...I can tell you there was alot of warmth and character to the man. More than you can see online with his trademark smiley fuck.gif ...

I'm so sad for his family...and for us. He was one of a kind.

I can't quite get my head around this news. Tim? Gone? Forever? Realizing that something this awful could only be posted if it was really true, means that it must be just that.

My deepest condolences to his family, and to all here who are going to miss him.

I remember Tim as a very wise man, hidden behind the mask of an ornery old fart. Some of the stuff that he posted hid the fact that he was a warm, decent, caring kinda guy. His joking around on the forum amused and entertained all. I'm proud to say that I had the pleasure of meeting Tim several times, and riding with him once.

RIP my friend. May your roads be beautiful and twisty for evermore.

My condolences go out to Patty and his family. May Tim’s new road be dry and full of curves under a sunny sky.

While we banter with TWN on the Forum, I had a long ongoing rapport with Tim via personal email and will miss the recipes, mockingbird plots and the bike talk.

Yes, Tim’s mockingbird got it. The m’bird’s dermises came via an O. Henry type plot twist. Tim had been baiting the bird to habituate it to an area so that he could set his plot into action. In the process a local cat found the bait and he actually habituated the cat to the area. Kitty was trotting into Tim's back yard for his meal when it spied the m’bird coming down for a snack. There was a short jump and a cloud of feathers followed by sweet silence.

... uh ... wow. Apart from exchanging a few PMs with Tim in the run-up to NAFO and having the distinct pleasure of meeting him once there, I can't say I knew him at all. But the character that I'd since decided he is is decent and warm. And above anything else, an asset to this community. Though his presence enriched us all, his passing is a considerable loss...

Tim, I never paid up on that tequila shot I'd promised. But no worries man. I'm good for it and I'll catch up with you soon enough...

At least he made it to Alaska this year. I know it was a dream of his.

This shot was taken from Andrew's bike, with Tim just ahead, on our way down Hwy1 to Morro Bay for dinner. Obviously, before he learned to "Stay Right". Good times!

When I saw the title of this thread, I hoped it was a joke and a bad one at that. I never had a chance to meet Tim, but I did enjoy his humor and insight on several different topics. We'll all miss you Tim.

Prayers and condolences to the entire family.

RIP Rider.

Not that long ago, Tim and I shared some PM conversation time. We talked about tires, suspension, routes and the usual things. The last message I got from him was signed, "Your friend, Tim".

Damn, what a loss!

We'll miss you buddy.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to your family. Our hearts will always ride with you.

I'm at a loss for words. I finally met Tim in person at NAFO, having somehow missed him at earlier WFOs. I truly enjoyed the several conversations with Tim and his warmth and humor, as well as just appreciating all the work he did for NAFO. Tim was full of life. I'm sure he has carried his attitude and wit over to the other side, where ever that may be. The forum will forever be missing him.

Prayers to Tim's wife and family.

***EDIT***
I had some thoughts... still in shock though.

I have met Tim only once at Fairlaner's for the 2008 SoCal Tech Day. I never got to ride with Tim, but I did get to spend the day with him, wrenching on our bikes, asking questions, and just joking around. What a great guy. I always enjoyed his wit and knowledge on the forum. You'll be missed Tim.

While Lorie and I were riding today I kept thinking of John Donne's work and words on how the loss of one man is a loss for us all.

..."No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."
"The liberties of a people never were, nor ever will be, secure when the transactions of their rulers may be concealed from them." - Patrick Henry

To say this is a shock would be a gross understatement. This place will never quite be the same without TWN. Whether you've met him in person or not, we're all indebted to him for what he has been so instrumental in creating here on the forum. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

I did not know Tim either but enjoyed the friendly banter he brought to the fourm....

I couldn't even believe it when I read the thread title. I never met him, but I've been here plenty long enough to know he was a big part of the landscape here, and helped make this forum what it is. This is just a huge shock. My heartfelt condolences go out to all those who'll feel the loss. He was certainly too young to die. I hope his days will be filled with picture perfect rides for eternity.

Very sad day. Although I never got a chance to meet Tim in person, I always viewed you as a friend. Everytime I say the Barney avatar it made me laugh because I knew Tim was going to have something funny, sharp or witty to say. Tim's sense of humor and wit were amazing as was his ability to put someone in their place when when needed. fuck.gif

The last thing he said to me was: "If you have any trouble let me know and I will take care of it". Tim, there is no greater pain then not being able to do the same for you now. But you can be assured that you will be in my daily prayers until we meet again. I always felt comfortable following you on the rides and knew that you of all people would arrive home safe at the end. Prayers and condolences for you my friend. See you in Heaven.

HOLY SHIT! I haven't been online for the last day or two, and the first thread I saw when I logged on was the one about pictures of TWN, so I figured he must have had a bad accident. So I went looking and found this thread. I can't believe it, this just sucks! I had finally gotten to meet him at NAFO, after swapping PM's for the last 2 years.

    Oh MAN, this just blows.

My condolences to his family, and I like to think he thought of all of us as his friends. I thought of him as one of mine.

    Fuck

"The Timmerest" as I call you .....you'll be so very much missed.

What a loss. Good fun all around my friend, and even better: You loved to share that fun around moto-bikes.

We shared a few good rides, one with Carver that IMO was one of the best multi-day rides in the history of the moto-bike. I'll embrace those great memories forever.

Thanks for the fun on this day .....chasing wonderul roads and beautiful spring colors. You even changed up your typical "salute" for this photo.

Unlike James Dean, You had a great cause my friend. Underneath all that "cool" was a warm heart, a good attitude and a love of people and moto-bikes. So very generous in all you have selflessly contributed to this community.

I sure thought we had many more of these moments in our future.

LOL, The Timmerest, you knew that not much better than phucking around on moto-bikes ..you did it well.

Fuck Me, I'm sorry for rambling, just so many thoughts.
I've been moping around the house all night and day ...............enough.............

I'm off this late afternoon to blister some Nevada tarmac in your honor ...may go for hours, may go for days ...and not only will the miles be in your honor ...but I'll finish up with a few (dozen?) of your favorite:

    Timmerest's drink at the Hondarosa.

Richard and Don -thanks for the calls last night. I'll catch ya in a few days ....gunna log a few miles in The Timmerest's honor, don't wait up, don't leave the lights on, we'll be riding.

I have never met the man, but always saw his avatar online. He seemed to be a very prominent part of this forum. I know that many of you had a personal, face to face relationship with him. If this can get back to his family, I and my CMA group will be praying for his family and all his friends here.

I am stunned. I was just notified by JDog of our loss. Tim was not only a forum bud while I owned my FJR, but a riding companion in our local club (like JDog) whom I considered my friend. I hadn't heard from him, so an email got this reply two weeks ago:
"Joe and I just got back from 6k miles. I'll fill you in later. Great ride! See you soon.
    Thanks for thinking of me.

    Tim"

So I didn't call him and now there is deafening silence. My heart is heavy with sadness.

Before I was even logged on to this site each time my mind was spinnig to the wonderful wit and humor that Tim had up his sleeve for the day. His post's were alway's colorful (to say the least) but alway's what they needed to be for the thread, imformative, witty, blunt, uplifting, engaging,or outright hilarious. But under the posts and through his life's adventures, here is man who touched people's live's in so many way's. We pray for his family and friend's and hope that our thought's may be of some comfort to them.

UPDATE: The Memorial service for Tim is going to be Saturday, September 27th in the Santa Barbara, CA area.

As of yet no specific time or place has been set. Also sometime around then Patty requested that Fairlainer and forum members take him on his final ride thru some of his favorite canyons. (He'll be cremated). We are not sure if this will happen the same day or the next day but it Will happen.

More details to follow to be sure. Fairlainer is going to be taking on some point-person activities, and I ask you all give him your support and patience.

    Thanks.

Tim is someone from this forum I absolutely definitely had hoped to meet, although the geography was disagreeable, coming from opposite coasts. His wit, humor, and knowledge were all astounding and deserving of notice, and I, along with many others, made sure he knew we noticed several times in these pages. Although the post counter has stopped, his contribution here and elsewhere in the riding world will never go away. I will miss all of that more than I ever thought I would miss anything about someone only known virtually. I had especially hoped to have a chance to show him that not all of Florida sucks for riding:

Come join me one afternoon, Tim. I'll give you a call that day.

Unfortunately I already have plans to go camping that Saturday with some close old friends that I haven't spent enough time with lately. I will however smoke a Cuban cigar my best friend gave me (which he smuggled into the country for me) and I'll enjoy a Jack and Coke in his honor that night.

I just checked the board and found this horrible news. Saw tim at the WFO's and NAFO. Shared some riding stories, life stories and talked business. Sitting here in tears it makes one think about the impression others make in our lives. Really liked Tim and will miss his wit an humor. Prayers to the family and friends. I pray God will give the people involved with the final arrangements strength and peace. All my love brother Tim. Mike in Fremont, Ca.

I also met Tim at NAFO, and found him to be sincere and accommodating. We will all miss his quick wit, and occasional Forum ravings. TWN, may you ride forever with the Big Guy, and no gas stops or flat tires. phil

Many photogs would not like this next pix for so many reasons. Exposure, lighting, focus, depth of field are all really screwed up.

I, on the other hand LOVE this pix of Tim.

I guess such is life. Tim is now into the greater, a path we all will follow sometime; it's just a matter of time.

We all have only so much time.

Ride on Tim, I really, really miss you.

I remember back in April of '06, on the Central Coast Romp ride, stopped at a turn-off on PCH about 15 miles north of Cambria with Tim, Andrew and Sheri, waiting for the rest of the group to catch up. The sun was shining, the hills were green, the ocean was that beautiful blue-green you sometimes see along the central coast, and I was thinking to myself how cool it was to be on this ride with these people.

RIP Tim. I will miss you.

I just saw this thread and I can't believe this news. I am so sad.

I just met Tim at NAFO and he was a really nice man and friendly to me personally, making sure I got my WFO6 shirt as well as the NAFO shirt, giving me a couple tips and generally helping make NAFO a great experience.

His humor was outstanding and I couldn't believe how quick his wit was. I will miss his presence here so much.

I still remember the movies he made on his bike, and watching them over and over on the forum; saying to myself I had to make it to his neck of the woods someday.

I just PM'd him last week telling him how much I enjoyed NAFO and appreciated his and others' efforts to make it so much fun for me. And of course, he took the time to message me back with a self-effacing reply.

My chest is very empty and heavy. My prayers to his family.

I just can't wrap my head around this......

I found out from Low Level FJR this morning when we met at Starbucks, in Redlands for our Big Bear Ride. Tim was to be on this ride.

Tim, my friend, you were there. You will always be there.

Tim was a very thoughful person, always ready to give helpful advice, caring and loved by all. He was a great leader, Rally Master during the WFO-6 in Park City and the NAFO in Golden, CO last month.

My condolance goes out to Patty and all that Tim has touched. God speed.

What an absolutely tragic loss for all. Really, really difficult to believe this can happen. Sincere condolences to all, most especially the family.

Tim, I never personally met you, but via the magic of this forum, you touched my life nonetheless. I have learned a great deal from you, perhaps the greatest of all were your enviable ability to combine wit, humor, and sincere caring toward others. For this, we are eternally grateful.

Thank you for all the contributions, TWN. Rest (and ride) in peace.

I just found out about Tim's passing... what a terrible loss.

I had known him back from the Sleazy board days, and exchanged numerous PMs and banter... I really enjoyed getting together in person in Reno, Park City, and most recently in Golden. The last memory I'll have is the parking lot conversation just before leaving Golden. We talked about his upcoming trip to Alaska, and said our goodbyes, expecting to see each other at another time in the future. Little did I know it would be the last time I'd see him in this life.

Even though we all have to pass the gate that Tim's now through, knowing that still doesn't make it any easier on those left behind, especially when it happens out of the blue. I'll always have a fond place in my heart for you Tim, and we'll catch up some time down the road.

      Godspeed.
Life sucks... and then you ride.

On our Big Bear Lake ride yesterday, the one Tim was to be on, we stopped for photos. Somehow, Tim's familiar wave fuck.gif or salute seemed appropiate. He always had a sense of humor that was contagious.

Tim, we will miss you but never be forgotten.

Tim was one of a kind and I believe his "secret" is out... Underneath that surly, crotchety old man exterior was a kind and gentle soul.

My heart goes out to his families. Both his close family members and his extended family here on the forum.

I can't think of a more appropriate time or place for this... Tim - FYYFF fuck.gif

      TWN/Tim,

You have no idea how much joy your posts brought to me. When I was having a bad day, I'd turn to your wit & humor for solace. My deepest condolences to his family and to the rest of us who will miss him terribly.

      Ride in peace, Tim.

Oh man, I'm reading this but it's not sinking in. Like someone else said, having only known him from the forums, back to EZboard, he's one guy I really wanted to meet in person. Peace brother, it's just not going to be the same without you here.

His memory is honored here at the place he liked to visit by all who knew and loved him. Prayers to his wife and all the Bates family. You are missed my friend. Painman. <>< cry.gif rip_1.gif

It is with terrible shock and sadness that I read this news about our TWN. What a terrible loss. It is too much to bear. He was my friend.

I first met Tim on this forum. In our first forum encounter a yellow smiley flipped me off. I wasn't sure how to take that from Barney Fife, but then--as always--there at the bottom of the post was another smiley sticking his tongue out at me. Classic. When we had a chance to finally meet and talk, I feel like we connected, not just because of the bikes. At NAFO we talked about work and family and dreams....

Tim was one of the principal reasons I participate(d) so much on this forum. Always eager for his good opinion, it's only now that I realize every time I posted something I was writing for Tim--because I knew he was there. He was there and he was thoughtful and compassionate and at bottom a friend. And he never let you get away with bullshit.

I wanted to know him better....much better.

My condolences to Tim's family, and to ours.

Good-bye, Tim. God bless you. And may you rest in peace, my friend.

Well, shit. Just got back from a 750 mile weekend on the Feejer and came home to check my favorite webpage, and THIS?!?

Never met TWN, but got alot from him by reading posts - someone I had hoped to meet someday. I started reading this thread and just got progressively more pissed and will have to resume later, but RIP and sorry that I never got the chance to hang.

Unbelievable! I'm shocked, this place feels a lot emptier just knowing he's not here, I can only imagine what it must be like for those that are his friends and family. TWN's passing is the equivalent of a mountain or a tree disappearing overnight. You may not be affected directly, but your world will always notice its loss.\

So Saturday morning I ride 50 miles down Highway 38 to meet the folks in Redlands for the group ride up to Big Bear. My friend and riding partner glossblk08 comes up to me and says did you hear that TWN had passed away? I had been away from my computer, so I had not. I was shocked and saddened.

Last April, Sandiegoland put on the LowCal 250. The day before the event, there was an opportunity to meet at a hotel in San Diego for dinner and talk. I got there early and saw Reno John's FJR with its beer keg (fuel cell) riding passenger. I figured RJ was probably resting from his ride down from Reno, so I just hung out by the lobby. After about 10 minutes, TWN pulls up. I had not met him before, but we talked for about a half hour before we went to roust Reno John, who very kindly gave both of us cold Heinekins. I spent all afternoon and most of the evening with them as well as Craig and his wife when they arrived.

My deepest memories of Tim was him telling me how much he liked my VFR and how he really missed his, and he told me that mighty Highway 190 had a website:

      http://www.mighty190.com/

The best part of participating in rallies and group rides are the people you meet.

In the pic that pegscraper posted, I am smiling. Right now I have tears in my eyes and am very sad to write this.

Tim, hope you get to take another ride on a VFR with gear-driven cams, like you used to have.

RIP, and peace to his family and friends...

When I saw the title of this thread, I opened it with a lot of trepidation.

And then I read Iggy's post on the circumstances of Tim's leaving and all of the contributions others posted to this thread. And I remembered again Tim's warmth and humor and his unselfish service and kindness to most everyone who came his way. And also that he'd recently accomplished some goals he'd set for himself - his service in organizing NAFO, his trip to Alaska, spending time doing what he loved to do...

Yes, there's the sadness of separation, but there's also such gratitude as I realize that I'd had the good fortune to meet this man, and share some little time with him on some great rides and weekends. Thank you, Tim. For everything!

UPDATE 8/23: The Memorial service for Tim is going to be Saturday September 27th, as of yet no time or place has been set. Also sometime around then patty requested that i/we take him on his final ride thru some of his favorite canyons. We are not sure if this will happen the same day or the next day but it Will happen.

Just got back from a weekend away and opened a mail from Jill (SP) telling me of this sad news.

TWN was one of the guys on here who's comments I always enjoyed. He was always witty and well informed. His sense of humour always came through and many of his wickedly dry quips made me laugh out loud.

My wife & I send our deepest sympathies to his family and friends, and to all on this forum who kenw him as I did, through the computer screen, and looked forward to his comments.

          RIP Tim.

Iggy, thank you for letting us know. I know it must have been difficult to make that first post.

          All,

A few thoughts have occurred to me, repeatedly, over the weekend. I feel a need for some sort of gesture on behalf of the Forum, itself, for Tim Bates. Here are a few thoughts, none of which I have any particular attachment to, but which I reveal to get the ball rolling.

          1. Retire Tim's favorite emoticon, forever.

          2. Retire the post count 11,031, such that this Forum, like a hotel and its 13th floor, simply skips that number evermore.

          3. Rename NAFO, which Tim both first named and organized, The Two Wheel Nut.

          4. ?

          5. ?

          .
          .
          .

I like #3 the best. The others would lose their meaning and new people wouldn't even notice. What better way to remember Tim than the event he helped get started.

I agree, something needs to be memorialized in Tim's name. I have no problem with naming the National Meet in honor of him.

If there are other suggestions, I'm open to seeing them in addition to the ones already listed.

          Thanks Ari, for starting this.

I'm sure there are many more suggestions out there.

I have to say that BOTH ideas, (naming the event after him... AND ... the TWN emoticon) are both fantastic ideas. The event name would signify the respect he earned as a man, a rider, a forum member and as an event coordinator... and the icon would be a clever way that he could keep showing up when you least expect it.

If I had a legacy that made people chuckle each time it popped up, heck, I'd be smiling, wherever I was.

Excellent Ari,let me throw this out see what happens. I see that Tim was member number 10 on this forum, which in my mind makes him one of the founders of this board.

          4. What would it be to add/incorporate a founders day gathering, maybe in conjunction with one of the regional meets, and have it float to different regions from year to year.

          Hmmm.....

It's Monday and the creativity was appearantly drowned by the libations from my high school reunion over the weekend, but this makes me think that maybe we could do something along the lines of the Cannonball Baker Sea To Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash.

          Maybe?

          Hell, I dunno.

I really enjoyed TWN's posts, though. Bummer.

It was good to have met Tim at NAFO and to have shook his hand.

At NAFO, it was Tim who announced the losses of our friends over the last year, and his thoughtful and gentle words for us to remember them all.

RIP my new friend! it was an honor to have met you.

I like the idea of calling it "The Two Wheel Nut."

I also had the though that Tim's favorite emoticon could be named TWN, so that anytime someone wants to put it into a thread they would click on "TWN" instead of the current designation.

          I can't believe this.....first Andrew, now TWN!!!!!

And just for everybody's edification....the circumstances of TWN's passing were NOT anything like Andrew's.

His wife shared with me that he was slumped over in his favorite recliner when she came home late Friday. She also said he looked peaceful and didn't seem to suffer. I think she also suggested there would be more information later from the coroner's office.

My guess is a bum ticker, but please realize that's speculation.

...and I suggest we don't need any more speculation than that. If/when I find out more......I'll be sure to post up.

          Thanks much.

this is a difficult notice to get. I also have not closely checked this site and only just now know of Tim's passing. I have known and ridden with him many times and will always be deeply grateful for having Tim as a friend for these few years. He was truly a devoted motorcyclist and lover of life and people. His contributions to this forum and to his leadership of WFO 6 & NAFO will not be forgotten.
My prayers go out to his family and loved ones. Tim shall always be deeply missed. A true lover of life, He was!!

Away from the computer all weekend, I log on to find this. I didn't know Tim personally but we've shared many emails. Heck, I bought his old GPS unit from him about a year ago.

Just last week... I think that it was Wednesday orThursday, he was telling me (via email) that he planned to attend NAFO2 & incorporate a visit to Conn. to see some family while on the east coast.

I was really looking forward to NAFO2 (in the se region) so I could meet him personally & have a drink or two together... & finally meet one of the few guys on this forum who could actually make me laugh out loud just by reading his comments.

He was such a witty smartass.

Tim, Godspeed bud. Have fun with Andrew... another person that I didn't know personally but also mourned.

My deepest, heartfelt condolences to close friends & family, Heidi

Is there anyway for those that interacted with him on this forum to somehow "keep" the PMs for posterity and NOT have them count against the number of PMs that accumulate in the private email sections? (Does that make sense...?) I never met him in person, but really enjoyed seeing the avatar as I scrolled down the responses, as I knew something was coming that I probably hadn't thought of.

People can archive PM's to their content to an Excel or HMTL file. Once in a personal file you can do whatever you want with the file external to the forum and counts.

Like the passing of Andrew, I'm once again surprised how much I feel for the loss of someone I never personally met. Like most of us, I will miss his wit, humor, and sarcasm and how much he was a part of this forum. Rest in peace Tim.

          RIP Tim.

I tried to read through all the replies on this thread, and although I never met Tim in the real world, just reading the heartfelt words of those who did, and the words of all the others who, like me, only met him through his (considerable) contribution to this forum, is more emotional than I can handle here at work. The responses here of all those who knew him are a testament to what a wonderful person he was.

I know that this community will miss him greatly, and I'm sure that he had as much an impact on the 'real world' communities that he was a member of, and they will miss him too.

Condolences to all his friends and family.

Like all of you, terribly shocked to see this, only now. Far too young, far too much going for himself in life, far too many feeling this loss: everything is wrong about this. He seemed to be one of those few forum members whose pronouncements on a subject were final, like once he spoke, the issue was resolved--or it had BETTER be. dry.gif The man had gravitas, to use a word that was popular a couple of years ago, and everyone recognized it.

So when I finally met Tim at the Clan Gathering this summer, I wasn't real sure what to expect, especially as we had just recently exchanged a series of PMs disagreeing over some damn thing. Of course I found a warm, friendly and open person, not the forbidding arbiter of the forum I wondered if I'd meet. A damn good guy, as most of you already knew. Sorry not to have known you better, Tim, and heartfelt condolences to your family and all those close to you.

I heard about it from Sherri Knight today. I did not know until TODAY because I have been absent from the board. She is my friend and of all people to have to tell me, Andrews widow. Shit!

It was an honor to have him in my home and as my friend. I have been blessed by knowing many great men no longer with us and many that still are..

Here are a couple more ideas for renaming NAFO, if we decide to do that...

              4. TIMBO (Tim's International Meeting of Bike Owners)

              5. TIM (a little more short and sweet - Tim's International Meet)

I am totally in shock. Every time I met Tim he had a smile and always had such a infectious glow. I appreciated his effort to always plan a good time for everyone.
His wit was something that always had me in stitches. I am going to miss him . This just doesn't seem right.
                Prayers for his family. Dan

Shocked to hear this. I hadn't had the pleasure of meeting Tim in person, but now know why Toe changed his avatar. Tim was a hoot to joke/spar with and I'll miss our exchanges. In his honor, Lane Splitting has been wiped from my vocabulary and from now on it'll be Lane "Sharing" from this point forward. I'll be hitting Hwy 190 in his honor soon. Godspeed Tim (and say hi to Andrew).

Condolences to Patty and to Tim's immediate family.

Thanks for the call Richard, and for the post Matt!

See you all (who can make it) in September in Santa Barbara.

I haven't been on much lately and just saw this...unbelievable. Had to read it twice to make sure it wasn't some sick joke. I just met TWN at NAFO and he seemed like a really great guy.

                Life IS really short.

Tim was a fixture on the SoCal rides. I'm numb at the news, I can still see him as if it were yesterday.

Another giant has left us this year. Be at peace, old friend.

I am standing upon the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white
sails to the morning breeze and starts
                for the blue ocean.

She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until at length
she hangs like a speck of white cloud
just where the sea and sky come
                to mingle with each other.

                Then, someone at my side says;
                "There, she is gone!"

                "Gone where?"
Gone from my sight. That is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull
and spar as she was when she left my side
and she is just as able to bear her
load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.

And just at the moment when someone
at my side says, "There, she is gone!"
There are other eyes watching her coming,
                and other voices ready to take up the glad shout;
                "Here she comes!"
                And that is dying.

                I close my eyes
Only for a moment, then the moment's gone
                All my dreams
Pass before my eyes, a curiosity

All they are is dust in the wind
                Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
                All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
                Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
                Now, don't hang on
Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
                It slips away
And all your money won't another minute buy
                Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
                Dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind

WOW...I was gone over the weekend and found this yesterday at work, where I couldn't read it. Like most on this board, I never met TWN in person; however, I always looked forward to his responses and to see what he was going to say. I think it is weird that so many of us feel a loss for someone we never even met. He was witty and smart, and had a good sense of humor. I am sad that he is gone and I am sad for his friends who will miss him; he had a LOT of them. sad.gif

Since Andrew's departure, anytime it's been a while since checking out the board, I'm always reluctant to go on, hoping there's no one missing. Today, talking to a friend from Ca, mentioned Meyer's seats always highly recommended by TWN. Then, tonight, finding this out. Totally stunned. Believe my first encounter with Tim was when he sent a reply to one of my first topics on "the wave". Busted a gut laughing (countless times). I loved reading his posts countering the "know it alls" (you know who you are) with intelligent quips. ...heavy sigh.

My prayers go out to the family, closest friends and fjr community.

I've been stuck taking tough small looks at my Blackberry since last Friday, hoping since the weekend to catch an update on what happened to our friend. I'm with the family on vacation in the Palm Desert area and there's very little WiFi where we're staying (won't stay here again!). Got a short text message from SockMonkey on Saturday a.m. with the bad news.

I did not know Tim as many here do, only thru a few PMs here and there, as well as a couple conversations at the last couple of WFOs and NAFO. Terrific guy. My condolences to those in his family and those here that are hurting.

I have to stop leaving town. Whenever I do, it is with great reluctance that I sign on to the forum after being gone for a few days. Seems as though every time I'm in that situation, someone goes down and gets hurt. I never expected this, though. I'm not one for big warm and fuzzies, but seriously, make the time with your family and friends count, people.

I've been away due to a family emergency and haven't kept up with this board. Reading this now I am in shock. I met TWN at the rally in Golden. He didn't know me from a bean pod out in the field but when I was introduced to him he took the time to sincerely meet and talk.

My prayers and thoughts are extended to family and friends. We are all very truly sorry for this loss. May those nearest to him have the time and space needed to heal and grieve. From what I've been told and read about him that his memories in others will include laughter, good times, and a sincere spirit. The road he has traveled while here on earth has brought goodness and kindness to others.

                    You are very much missed.

                    Rest in peace.

Although I did not know you personally, from what I saw at NAFO and on this forum, you have a HUGE heart and the patience of the saints you're riding with now.

My thoughts are with TWN's family...

Had the pleasure of meeting TWN at NAFO and chatting for a few. Glad I did, but now wish I'd had the chance to know him better.

What a bummer. Everything I can think of to write to describe how much this guy will be missed seems totally inadequate. RIP TWN!

Hello. I am Harrie from the Marriott in Golden, Co. We were stunned at this news. Our condolences to Tim's family and friends. I am personally glad to have had the chance to know and laugh with Tim. He is a wonderful man. Hopefully, he is travelling the winding roads in the mountains here as well. Thanks for letting us be part of the memories of Tim.

I always wanted to meet Tim.
I remember when I was still new to the Forum. I posted a question and TWN promptly answered it.
I mistook a light jab for a something else and I got sort of worked up over it.
It seemed to some that I had crossed a line with one of my replies. I fired off an apologetic PM to twowheelnut.
I wish I still had his response. He didn't seem the least bit offended and let the whole thing go.
Some other clowns went on to rub my nose in my mistake, but not Tim.

He lived better than I do.
He interacted with others better than I do.
He died better than I expect to.

                      Good bye Tim

                      for their loss.

I met him during Khunajawdge's carnitas BBQ in Los Osos, which if anyone recalls was
one hell of a great time.

God bless him for all the energy, wit, laughter and love he brought to the FJR Forum.

At first I thought TWN was a dick...and after reading his posts for a few years...well I still thought he was a dick but a good guy too, and a huuuuge contributor to the entertainment of reading this forum. It will be different here...sad news, really sad to see another one gone. RIP

Wow. My first day back from an extended trip and this is what I find. sad.gif

I'm very sorry to hear about this and my best wishes go out to TWN's friends and family.

TWN was a regular poster on the Million Mile Challenge thread. Not all came with descriptions, but here they are . . .

rack me up for 180 miles of local back road riding on 1/1/08
Add 2 miles for me today! Test rode my newly reassembled FJR after the GPS/general service work.
                      245 miles today
370 today. I wasn't trying and Duff was holding me up
1,187 from Thursday 'til today. Yeah, I know, I was slacking, but I had to take some photo's and experience a promenade of the femoral kind from a greatly gammed ecdysiast.
Piddly 145 today on the Wabs. Fuggin' wind
210 Sunday. The poppies are everywhere!
260 today, 60 of it in the dirt. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
660 this weekend running bovine blockades with Carver and RenoJohn.
                      513 yesterday and today
225 with lots of dirt below the wheels... Waaaaahooooooooo!

330 this weekend, plus the odo tip-toed past 60,000.
I ran outta coffee beans today, so 363 miles for running that errand.
                      455
                      182. Freaky

                      Erm... +35.
5,873. Anyone like some Alaskan bugs? I gots plenty.

For what it's worth, he put 14,235 miles underneath two wheels this year. Godspeed.

Dam it, I've been out of touch here and just saw this terrible news.
All the good guys are leaving us to soon. Didn't get to meet Tim but always enjoyed his great wit and humor.
I'm glad he got to take that trip to Alaska. Peace to you Tim and your family, this place will never be the same for me again.

I heard about this last week when I e-mailed Gypsy when I was in Southern Cal prior to the 3 Flags. No internet and Sylvia and I've been riding hard ever since. We just got home tonight.

Can never make any sense out of crap like this. I'm so glad that Tim got to do his Alaska ride after NAFO - a good lesson to us all as we nver know what time we have left.

TWN was a big man with a big heart - he will be missed...

I feel very fortunate to have met Tim Bates and to have been able to spend some time with him.

You could certainly tell that Tim knew how to be a good friend. He had a nice calm and caring way about him, and yet could still give you shit. I really enjoyed the time that I got to spend with Tim.

Hanging with Tim was like wearing that really comfortable pair of jeans and and well worn sneakers. Just damn comfortable with no pretences.

                        Tim I will miss you.
