Called Randy at Randys Cycles (540-854-0689) to see if he's interested in rebuilding the Kz engine to fix leaky poor quality gasket set.. He was a bit unsure but as conversation unfolded think he's interested. Randy is about a year out though.. which is fine.
So started writing Randy an email but then realized I'd just be wasting his time with this diatribe.
So made this video instead.
Hi Randy,
It was nice talking to you last Friday. I’m the guy with a 79 KZ1300 A1 and leaky gaskets :)
As we discussed, I’d like to get on your ‘list’ and am fully aware you’re at least a year out. I’m good with that schedule.
Got to thinking you might want to see pics of the bike so you know you’re not walking into a nightmare…
Some history:
- I’ve owned since new
- The bike burned oil from day 1. About 1 quart every 200+ miles. Kawasaki said that was ‘within limit’s and refused warranty work
- At 100k+ miles, and several years of neglect, decided on a frame-up and full engine resto.
- The work was done by a total gear head (FAA Airframe and Power Plant licensed) who has restored boats, planes, bikes
- Here’s some engine rebuild links from my website which hopefully show quality workmanship
- 2013-04-19 Short Block Rebuild
- 2013-12-17 Lower End Together and Frame Stripped
- 2014-01-07 Engine Upper Assembly
- Engine currently has 2,200 miles since rebuild
The current issue list –
- Oil leaks due to poor quality gasket kit – engine will need be split to fix
- Water pump mechanical seal weeping (only when sitting)
- Overheating (fixed now?)
- After rebuild, overheating issues. Probably way more info than you need or want, but the fixe(s) are here https://candybuttorg.ipage.com/cba/node/953.
I would like you to ensure ignition timing is correct. We replaced the timing assembly as a unit which, if I understand correctly, voids the factory timing marks. Apparently, the factory stamped custom ‘witness marks’ for each unit as it rolled down the line. I may be wrong with that statement… but checking for sure would be great

Thank you for the email and the pictures. I will add you to our waiting list, and I will also review the photos you sent.
I will keep in touch and we can plan a time to get the bike in and begin work on it as the time draws nearer.
Have a great Holiday Season!
