At least he made it to Alaska this year. I know it was a dream of his.
This shot was taken from Andrew's bike, with Tim just ahead, on our way down Hwy1 to Morro Bay for dinner. Obviously, before he learned to "Stay Right". Good times!
Vaya Con Dios, my friend. Stay Right!
QUOTE
You can shed tears that he is gone,
or you can smile because he has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that he'll come back,
or you can open your eyes and see all he's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him,
or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember him only that he is gone,
or you can cherish his memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind,
be empty and turn your back.
Or you can do what he'd want:
smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

Anyone want to bet that the first thing Tim does is find Andrew and deliver about 20 good old fashioned Jimmy Kicks on his ass?
..and then go for a ride?
So long my friend, today I ride with heavy heart and warm memories.
Oh, and Tim?

"The Timmerest" as I call you .....you'll be so very much missed.
What a loss. Good fun all around my friend, and even better: You loved to share that fun around moto-bikes.
We shared a few good rides, one with Carver that IMO was one of the best multi-day rides in the history of the moto-bike. I'll embrace those great memories forever.
Thanks for the fun on this day .....chasing wonderul roads and beautiful spring colors. You even changed up your typical "salute" for this photo.
Unlike James Dean, You had a great cause my friend. Underneath all that "cool" was a warm heart, a good attitude and a love of people and moto-bikes. So very generous in all you have selflessly contributed to this community.
I sure thought we had many more of these moments in our future.
LOL, The Timmerest, you knew that not much better than phucking around on moto-bikes ..you did it well.
Fuck Me, I'm sorry for rambling, just so many thoughts.
I've been moping around the house all night and day ...............enough.............
I'm off this late afternoon to blister some Nevada tarmac in your honor ...may go for hours, may go for days ...and not only will the miles be in your honor ...but I'll finish up with a few (dozen?) of your favorite:
Timmerest's drink at the Hondarosa.
Richard and Don -thanks for the calls last night. I'll catch ya in a few days ....gunna log a few miles in The Timmerest's honor, don't wait up, don't leave the lights on, we'll be riding.

More details to follow to be sure. Fairlainer is going to be taking on some point-person activities, and I ask you all give him your support and patience.

I just met Tim at NAFO and he was a really nice man and friendly to me personally, making sure I got my WFO6 shirt as well as the NAFO shirt, giving me a couple tips and generally helping make NAFO a great experience.
His humor was outstanding and I couldn't believe how quick his wit was. I will miss his presence here so much.
I still remember the movies he made on his bike, and watching them over and over on the forum; saying to myself I had to make it to his neck of the woods someday.
I just PM'd him last week telling him how much I enjoyed NAFO and appreciated his and others' efforts to make it so much fun for me. And of course, he took the time to message me back with a self-effacing reply.
My chest is very empty and heavy. My prayers to his family.

Tim, I never personally met you, but via the magic of this forum, you touched my life nonetheless. I have learned a great deal from you, perhaps the greatest of all were your enviable ability to combine wit, humor, and sincere caring toward others. For this, we are eternally grateful.
Thank you for all the contributions, TWN. Rest (and ride) in peace.

The Endless Font of Useless Knowledge...
Posted 24 August 2008 - 10:22 AM
I had known him back from the Sleazy board days, and exchanged numerous PMs and banter... I really enjoyed getting together in person in Reno, Park City, and most recently in Golden. The last memory I'll have is the parking lot conversation just before leaving Golden. We talked about his upcoming trip to Alaska, and said our goodbyes, expecting to see each other at another time in the future. Little did I know it would be the last time I'd see him in this life.
Even though we all have to pass the gate that Tim's now through, knowing that still doesn't make it any easier on those left behind, especially when it happens out of the blue. I'll always have a fond place in my heart for you Tim, and we'll catch up some time down the road.
Godspeed.

I first met Tim on this forum. In our first forum encounter a yellow smiley flipped me off. I wasn't sure how to take that from Barney Fife, but then--as always--there at the bottom of the post was another smiley sticking his tongue out at me. Classic. When we had a chance to finally meet and talk, I feel like we connected, not just because of the bikes. At NAFO we talked about work and family and dreams....
Tim was one of the principal reasons I participate(d) so much on this forum. Always eager for his good opinion, it's only now that I realize every time I posted something I was writing for Tim--because I knew he was there. He was there and he was thoughtful and compassionate and at bottom a friend. And he never let you get away with bullshit.
I wanted to know him better....much better.
My condolences to Tim's family, and to ours.
Good-bye, Tim. God bless you. And may you rest in peace, my friend.

Last April, Sandiegoland put on the LowCal 250. The day before the event, there was an opportunity to meet at a hotel in San Diego for dinner and talk. I got there early and saw Reno John's FJR with its beer keg (fuel cell) riding passenger. I figured RJ was probably resting from his ride down from Reno, so I just hung out by the lobby. After about 10 minutes, TWN pulls up. I had not met him before, but we talked for about a half hour before we went to roust Reno John, who very kindly gave both of us cold Heinekins. I spent all afternoon and most of the evening with them as well as Craig and his wife when they arrived.
My deepest memories of Tim was him telling me how much he liked my VFR and how he really missed his, and he told me that mighty Highway 190 had a website:
http://www.mighty190.com/
The best part of participating in rallies and group rides are the people you meet.
In the pic that pegscraper posted, I am smiling. Right now I have tears in my eyes and am very sad to write this.
Tim, hope you get to take another ride on a VFR with gear-driven cams, like you used to have.

And then I read Iggy's post on the circumstances of Tim's leaving and all of the contributions others posted to this thread. And I remembered again Tim's warmth and humor and his unselfish service and kindness to most everyone who came his way. And also that he'd recently accomplished some goals he'd set for himself - his service in organizing NAFO, his trip to Alaska, spending time doing what he loved to do...
Yes, there's the sadness of separation, but there's also such gratitude as I realize that I'd had the good fortune to meet this man, and share some little time with him on some great rides and weekends. Thank you, Tim. For everything!

I'm having a hard time typing this.....but it's got to be said. We lost Tim "twowheelnut" Bates. He passed away at home Friday evening.
I've just spoken with his wife, Patty, and she said he seemed peaceful and didn't suffer...he just died. He was online several hours before his passing, so I'd like to think he was thinking about us.
I extended to Patty the forum's condolences and to call if there is ANYTHING we can do.
She knew how much we all meant to him and knows how much he meant to us...and will share details about a memorial in the days to come.
And I know we all will miss him. My heart weeps....
But, I'm sure as a fellow forum member observed.....he and Andrew are riding together right now....probably in 5th gear.
/ Matt
P.S. We've been through tragedy before on this forum and did very well at grieving respectfully...and I'm thankful we'll be just as graceful this time.

A few thoughts have occurred to me, repeatedly, over the weekend. I feel a need for some sort of gesture on behalf of the Forum, itself, for Tim Bates. Here are a few thoughts, none of which I have any particular attachment to, but which I reveal to get the ball rolling.
1. Retire Tim's favorite emoticon, forever.
2. Retire the post count 11,031, such that this Forum, like a hotel and its 13th floor, simply skips that number evermore.
3. Rename NAFO, which Tim both first named and organized, The Two Wheel Nut.

And just for everybody's edification....the circumstances of TWN's passing were NOT anything like Andrew's.
His wife shared with me that he was slumped over in his favorite recliner when she came home late Friday. She also said he looked peaceful and didn't seem to suffer. I think she also suggested there would be more information later from the coroner's office.
My guess is a bum ticker, but please realize that's speculation.
...and I suggest we don't need any more speculation than that. If/when I find out more......I'll be sure to post up.
Thanks much.

We did about 500 miles, had lunch together, and chatted at gas stops and piss breaks.
In order to protect his forum image, I didn't post up about how I thought he would be a complete dick, but Tim turned out to be quite different than his alter-ego TWN. He was a great guy and a riot to hang out with.
I'll have a Jack and coke in your honor tonight, you will be missed, Tim!
He wouldn't ruin a good glass of "Jack" with coke "just a splash of water please" was what i would always get from him.

I tried to read through all the replies on this thread, and although I never met Tim in the real world, just reading the heartfelt words of those who did, and the words of all the others who, like me, only met him through his (considerable) contribution to this forum, is more emotional than I can handle here at work. The responses here of all those who knew him are a testament to what a wonderful person he was.
I know that this community will miss him greatly, and I'm sure that he had as much an impact on the 'real world' communities that he was a member of, and they will miss him too.
Condolences to all his friends and family.

So when I finally met Tim at the Clan Gathering this summer, I wasn't real sure what to expect, especially as we had just recently exchanged a series of PMs disagreeing over some damn thing. Of course I found a warm, friendly and open person, not the forbidding arbiter of the forum I wondered if I'd meet. A damn good guy, as most of you already knew. Sorry not to have known you better, Tim, and heartfelt condolences to your family and all those close to you.

Here are a couple more ideas for renaming NAFO, if we decide to do that...
4. TIMBO (Tim's International Meeting of Bike Owners)
5. TIM (a little more short and sweet - Tim's International Meet)

A ship at my side spreads her white
sails to the morning breeze and starts
for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until at length
she hangs like a speck of white cloud
just where the sea and sky come
to mingle with each other.
Then, someone at my side says;
"There, she is gone!"
"Gone where?"
Gone from my sight. That is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull
and spar as she was when she left my side
and she is just as able to bear her
load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.
And just at the moment when someone
at my side says, "There, she is gone!"
There are other eyes watching her coming,
and other voices ready to take up the glad shout;
"Here she comes!"
And that is dying.

Only for a moment, then the moment's gone
All my dreams
Pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind
Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
Now, don't hang on
Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away
And all your money won't another minute buy
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind

I have to stop leaving town. Whenever I do, it is with great reluctance that I sign on to the forum after being gone for a few days. Although I did not know you personally, from what I saw at NAFO and on this forum, you have a HUGE heart and the patience of the saints you're riding with now.
My thoughts are with TWN's family...

Had the pleasure of meeting TWN at NAFO and chatting for a few. Glad I did, but now wish I'd had the chance to know him better.
What a bummer. Everything I can think of to write to describe how much this guy will be missed seems totally inadequate. RIP TWN!

His witty and humorous posts always brightened up my day. My wife knew when I was on the forum AND laughing TWN had replied to a post. He'll be missed by this lurker...
Godspeed...

I remember when I was still new to the Forum. I posted a question and TWN promptly answered it.
I mistook a light jab for a something else and I got sort of worked up over it.
It seemed to some that I had crossed a line with one of my replies. I fired off an apologetic PM to twowheelnut.
I wish I still had his response. He didn't seem the least bit offended and let the whole thing go.
Some other clowns went on to rub my nose in my mistake, but not Tim.
He lived better than I do.
He interacted with others better than I do.
He died better than I expect to.
Good bye Tim

for their loss.
I met him during Khunajawdge's carnitas BBQ in Los Osos, which if anyone recalls was
one hell of a great time.
God bless him for all the energy, wit, laughter and love he brought to the FJR Forum.

Can never make any sense out of crap like this. I'm so glad that Tim got to do his Alaska ride after NAFO - a good lesson to us all as we nver know what time we have left.
TWN was a big man with a big heart - he will be missed...

You could certainly tell that Tim knew how to be a good friend. He had a nice calm and caring way about him, and yet could still give you shit. I really enjoyed the time that I got to spend with Tim.
Hanging with Tim was like wearing that really comfortable pair of jeans and and well worn sneakers. Just damn comfortable with no pretences.
Tim I will miss you.
