2020-03-23 MowieMowie Transmission Fix - Rebuilt

2020-03-21 MowieMowie Transmission Fix and Rebuild

So MowieMowie had a squalling transmission.

OEM transmission not repairable.. GearBurger everywhere.

So bought a used one from eBay. $100 dollars shipped to the door.

Was running out of time due to upcoming surgeries and didn't want to not have a ride, so slapped it right in.

And it made noise too, but it would still move.

Now with Corona Virus, sheltering at home, time to drop it and see if one good tranny can be made from two.

The OEM unit had mucho play at red arrow.

Bolt locations.

NTM is out.

NTM unit on the 'healing bench'!

Handy method to know what goes where later.

OEM unit top left. Popping the case on NTM unit.

For some reason the top case doesn't want to come off. Binding somewhere.

Hate it when a cover is opened and something goes 'SNAP' with metallic sound.

This unit looks a LOT better.

Axle and differential removed.

Differential. Plenty of lube.

Crap. Broken gear.

Time remove the entire assembly.

Then to fiind two more broken gears, this time spiders in differential. My OEM two look good though.

Gears replaced and all lubed up. Wish I had some lighter lube, this stuff was very sticky and hard to rotate by hand.
And MowieMowie only has 14 horsepower!

Many a rag met it's death today...

Another oh shit moment. The shifting pawls are different.
The OEM had on pawl.

NTM unit had two. A better design.

I was swapping top cases to tighten the axle back up where it exits the housing.
Swapped pinion gears using the better of the two.

Hours later, NTM refubished and ready for install.

Parts is parts!

Installed but two issues. Should have quit earlier. Getting tired and cranky.

Issue #1, missed the belt alignment. Should be on inside of bracket.

Back end shot.

Issue #2, the OEM case had a broken bolt. Would have been easier to fix on the bench.

No video, but nice and tight.

Brake installed.

Belt routing.

The End for Now.

2020-03-25 More Tranny and Axle Blues

I broke the head off a mounting bolt on the OEM case.
Time to try and fix it.

Front LHS.

My tool kit.

Drilling the center out.
Had to make the hole bigger to use a stouter EZ out.

It failed miserably. The only outcome would be a broken EZ Out so I stopped.

So what the hell? Why is this axle sticking out so far?

Long of short, the gearbox uses two different length axles, the pumpkin is not centered.

Here's the offset.

Well crap.

The way it's supposed to look.

So, gotta pull the transmission again.

2020-03-31 - Mowie-Mowie Transmission fixed for real.

So then. Lessons learned.

"It's hard to be perfect"

RIP

After all the work, the revamped transmission, rev 2, or is it rev3, or rev4, had a growling sound. Rear end. CRAP.

Ok, pull the transmission out, again.

The problem, I think, was the new-to-me-used  bottom case, where the planetary gear resides, got worn out of round, causing binding and the growl sound.

Fetched the OEM lower case and restuffed all the guts back in.

Cleaned the lower case. What a mess. Lots of gear-burger, and the OEM grease is stinky. Really stinky.

True confession. Never realized each axle is a different length; the pumpkin is off-center by about 2.5 inches.
In this picture, you can see the offset. The factor sticker is approximately center-line.
And I have the worng length axle on the LHS. So out comes the transmission, AGAIN.

Finally, got it right. But will the tranmission converty rotary motion to forward motion?

The answer is YES! As of today, 2020-04-07, I have 8 hours of extreme hill mowing under the belt.
Speaking of belts, I need to replace the propulsion belt, it's too loose and derails when shifting quickly from forward to reverse.
AND - a belt guard I removed... Can't figure out where it attaches. Got figure this one out.

For now, I'm happy!
Of course, I have way too much time into this project.
If I charged a measley 80 buck an hour, I could have bought a new mower.
But, cash is a bit short, and keeping this 1987 mower alive is kind of coolio.

Today mowed 4 hours of hills. The knobbie tires are much better than Turf tires.
Very little slippage, no skipping downhill and picking up scary speeds.

All gears in the box work really good too.

Now to find a replacement propulsion belt...
